The Akshardham Temple in Delhi sits on the banks of the Yamuna River, not in the crowded lanes of Old Delhi. The complex is vast. The stone is pink. The carvings are deep. The temple is not ancient. It was opened in 2005. But the tradition is old. The architecture follows the Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra. The material is Rajasthani pink sandstone and Italian Carrara marble. Daily Darshan Timings for 2026

The Main Temple and the Mandapams
The main temple is 141 feet high. It has 234 carved pillars, 9 domes, and 20,000 sculpted figures. The inner sanctum, called the Garbhagruh, houses the idol of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Around him are the idols of his successors, Gunatitanand Swami, Yogiji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, and Bhagatji Maharaj. There are separate altars for Shri Radha Krishna, Shri Sita Ram, Shri Lakshmi Narayan, and Shri Shiva Parvati.
The temple has nine mandapams. Swaminarayan Mandapam is the central sanctum. Paramhansa Mandapam is 72 feet high, decorated with carved domes and pillars. Ghanshyam Mandapam is 38 feet high, built on eight pillars, showing the childhood stories of Swaminarayan. Lila Mandapam has four faced pillars carved with stories of his life. Neelkanth Mandapam has an idol of Neelkanth Varni, the name Swaminarayan took during his seven year pilgrimage. Smruti Mandapam preserves his holy remains, clothes, hair, beads, and footprints. Sahajanand Mandapam shows him sitting under a neem tree. Bhakta Mandapam has 148 statues of devoted followers. Purushottam Mandapam has a statue of Swaminarayan with his devotee Akshar.
The Mandovar, the outer portico, is 25 feet high and 611 feet long. It has 2,000 stone sculptures of saints, avatars, and devotees. The Gajendra Peeth, the lower plinth, shows carvings of elephants. The elephants are not decorations. They are symbols of strength and royalty.
Exhibitions and Ticket Prices for 2026
Akshardham is not only a temple. It is a museum. Three exhibitions are held in three large halls. Sahajanand Darshan is the Hall of Values. It uses 3 D dioramas, animatronics, and projections to teach non violence, family harmony, and morality. The message is simple. The technology is advanced.
Neelkanth Darshan is a large format film on a screen 85 feet wide and 65 feet tall. The movie follows Neelkanth Varni, the 11 year old boy who walked across India for seven years. The film was shot in 108 locations. The cast had 45,000 people.
Sanskruti Darshan is a boat ride. You sit in a boat. You float through sets depicting ancient India. The Vedic marketplace, the game of chess, the classroom at Takshashila, ancient surgeries, all of it is recreated. The ride lasts 12 minutes. The commentary is in Hindi. The exhibition ticket costs ₹260 for adults, ₹210 for senior citizens above 60, and ₹160 for children aged 4 to 11. Children below 4 are free. The ticket covers all three exhibitions. The boat ride is included.

Sahaj Anand Water Show
The water show is held at the Yagnapurush Kund, a large stepwell with 2,800 steps and 108 small shrines. The central pool is shaped like nine lotus flowers. A 29 foot bronze statue of Neelkanth Varni stands in front. The show lasts 24 minutes. It tells the story from the Kena Upanishad. Lasers, water jets, underwater flames, and surround sound are synchronized.
The ticket for the water show is ₹110 for adults and ₹80 for children aged 4 to 11. Children below 4 are free. The show is in Hindi.
Thematic Gardens and Other Attractions
Bharat Upvan is a garden with bronze statues of ancient warriors, freedom fighters, national leaders, and other prominent personalities. The garden is open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Entry is free. Yogihriday Kamal is another garden, shaped like a lotus flower. It is named after Yogiji Maharaj.
The Abhishek Mandap is a place where devotees can perform abhishekam of the Neelkanth Varni idol. The process takes 10 to 15 minutes. The donation is ₹50. Narayan Sarovar is a water body surrounding the temple. It contains holy water from 151 rivers and lakes, including Prayag Triveni Sangam, Manikarnika Ghat, Manasarovar, and Pushkar Sarovar.
