The Kundrathur Murugan Temple sits on a small hill, about twenty five kilometers from Chennai. The city spreads below, flat and gray. But the hill is green. The climb is short, eighty four steps. The temple then closes for an afternoon break from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. During these two and a half hours, the sanctum remains closed. The priests perform internal rituals. Do not come during these hours expecting darshan.
The temple reopens at 3:30 PM. The evening darshan runs from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM. The Ardha Jama Pooja is from 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The final darshan is from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The temple closes at 8:30 PM.
Darshan is free. No ticket is required. The waiting time on weekdays is fifteen to twenty minutes. On weekends, twenty to thirty minutes. On festival days, two to three hours.

Thai Poosam is the biggest festival. It falls in January or February. The temple is packed. The crowd is thick. The energy is high. Skanda Sashti is in October or November. This festival celebrates the victory of Murugan over the demon Surapadman. Panguni Uthiram is in March or April. The wedding festival of Murugan and Deivanai.

How to Reach the Temple
By bus, local buses run from Tambaram, Pallavaram, and Porur. The bus stop is at the base of the hill. From the bus stop, walk to the steps. The climb begins.
By auto rickshaw or taxi, autos are available from nearby areas. Taxis can be hired from anywhere in Chennai. The drive from Tambaram takes about twenty minutes. From Chennai Central, about forty five minutes.
By private vehicle, parking is available near the base of the hill. The climb is short. The steps are well maintained.
Dress Code and Rules
Dress modestly. Traditional attire is preferred. Men should wear dhoti or pyjama with a shirt. Women should wear saree or salwar kameez. Shorts and sleeveless tops are not appropriate.
Remove your footwear before entering. There are shoe stands at the base of the steps. Mobile phone usage is restricted inside the sanctum. Keep your phone on silent. Photography is not allowed inside the sanctum. Follow the queue. Do not push.

Avoid the summer months from April to June. The heat is intense. The stone steps are hot. The climb is exhausting. The temple is still crowded, but the discomfort is high.
