The Sabarimala Temple sits deep in the Western Ghats, surrounded by dense forests and steep hills. It is not a temple you drive up to. You walk. The last four kilometers from Pamba are on foot, climbing stone steps, breathing hard, sweating in the cold air. The pilgrimage is not easy. The rules are strict. Men wear black or blue dhotis. Women between ten and fifty are not allowed. You carry an irumudikettu, a two compartment bag containing offerings, on your head. You chant Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa. The forest echoes with the call. The temple is open only for a few months each year, from November to January, and on a few special days. The rest of the time, the doors are closed. The Lord is in meditation.
The deity is Lord Ayyappa, the son of Shiva and Mohini, the female form of Vishnu. He is Hariharan, the child of both Vishnu and Shiva. The temple is one of the five Shasta temples established by Lord Parasurama. The prince of the Pandalam dynasty meditated here and merged with the divine. The temple was rebuilt in 1950 after a fire. The sanctum is small. The idol is made of Panchaloha, five metals. The eighteen sacred steps, Pathinettu Thrippadi, lead to the sanctum. Only devotees carrying the irumudikettu can climb them. The rest enter through a side gate.

The Eighteen Sacred Steps
The Pathinettu Thrippadi, the eighteen sacred steps, are the main entrance to the sanctum. Only devotees who have carried the Irumudikettu and observed the forty one day vratham are allowed to climb them. The steps represent the eighteen hills surrounding the temple, the eighteen puranas, and the eighteen weapons of the Lord.
Devotees climb the steps barefoot, chanting Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa. The steps are covered with Panchaloha, five metals. Climbing them is the final act of the pilgrimage. The sanctum is just beyond.
The Dress Code
The dress code is strict. Men must wear a dhoti, colored black, blue, or orange. No shirts or vests are allowed inside the sanctum. You can wear an upper cloth, but it must be removed before climbing the eighteen steps. Women between ten and fifty are not allowed to enter the temple. Women above fifty must wear a saree.
How to Reach the Temple
By air, the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport, about 210 kilometers from Sabarimala. From the airport, take a taxi or bus to Pamba, the base camp.
By train, the nearest railway station is Chengannur, about 90 kilometers from Sabarimala. From Chengannur, take a bus or taxi to Pamba.
By road, Pamba is the last point accessible by vehicle. From Pamba, you must walk four kilometers uphill to the temple. The walk takes about two to three hours. The path is steep. There are shops and rest stops along the way.
Accommodation Near the Temple
Pamba has basic accommodation. There are dharamshalas and lodges. The rooms are simple. The prices are low. During the Mandala season, the accommodation fills up quickly. Book in advance.
If you cannot find a room in Pamba, stay in Erumeli or Pathanamthitta. The drive to Pamba takes about two hours. You must start early in the morning to reach the temple on time.
A Final Word for First Time Pilgrims
Sabarimala is not a tourist destination. It is a test. The fast, the celibacy, the cold nights, the steep climb, all of it is a test. The Lord does not need your ghee. He does not need your prayers. He needs your discipline. The forty one days of vratham are not empty ritual. They are training. By the time you climb the eighteen steps, you are not the same person who started the fast. That is the transformation. That is the pilgrimage.
