Chaitra Navratri is not the loud Navratri of October. That one is Sharad Navratri, celebrated with garba and nights that stretch past midnight. Chaitra Navratri is quieter. It falls in March or April, when the winter chill is gone and the summer heat has not yet arrived. The trees are blooming. The air is fresh. This is the Hindu New Year, the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2083. The goddess comes first. The new year starts after her blessing.
In 2026, Chaitra Navratri begins on Thursday, 19 March, and ends on Friday, 27 March. Ram Navami, the birth of Lord Rama, is on 27 March. The festival lasts nine nights. The goddess arrives in a palanquin, Palki, and departs on an elephant. The palanquin sways. The elephant stands firm. That is the message of the year. The beginning may be shaky. The end will be stable.
Ghatasthapana The First Ritual
Ghatasthapana, or Kalash Sthapana, is the ritual that begins Navratri. You cannot start the nine days without it. The ritual must be done at a specific time, during the first one third of the day, while Pratipada Tithi is prevailing.
In 2026, Pratipada Tithi begins at 6:40 AM on 19 March. The primary window for Ghatasthapana is from 6:52 AM to 7:43 AM. If you miss this window, a secondary window is available during the Abhijit Muhurat, from 12:05 PM to 12:53 PM.
The Kalash is a clay pot. You fill it with water. You add a few drops of Ganga Jal if you have it. You place mango leaves at the mouth of the pot. You put a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top. You tie a red thread around the neck. This is not decoration. The pot is the body. The water is life. The coconut is the ego, hard on the outside, pure on the inside. The leaves are the senses offered back to God.
You draw a Swastika on the pot with kumkum. You place the pot on a bed of rice. You sow barley seeds in the soil around it. The seeds will sprout by the ninth day. The green shoots are the blessing. The growth is the proof.
The Nine Days and the Nine Goddesses
The first day, 19 March, is for Maa Shailputri. She is the daughter of the mountain. She does not move. The color is yellow. The offering is pure ghee. The lesson is to find your ground. Before the mind can rise, it must stop running.
The second day, 20 March, is for Maa Brahmacharini. She walked barefoot. She meditated for thousands of years. The color is green. The offering is sugar. The lesson is that discipline is devotion. The sweetness comes after the effort.
The third day, 21 March, is for Maa Chandraghanta. The bell on her forehead rings as warning and protection. The color is grey. The offering is milk sweets. The lesson is to be alert, not anxious. Watch your reactions. Do not be governed by them.
The fourth day, 22 March, is for Maa Kushmanda. She created the universe with a smile. The color is orange. The offering is malpua. The lesson is that you are a creator. Stop rehearsing fears. Start generating joy.
The fifth day, 23 March, is for Maa Skandamata. She carries the warrior Skanda while remaining calm. The color is white. The offering is bananas. The lesson is to serve with love, not obligation. Carry your duties as offerings.

The seventh day, 25 March, is for Maa Kaalratri. She appears fearsome. She destroys pretense. The color is dark blue. The offering is jaggery. The lesson is to face what you have been avoiding. The darkness is where the grace hides.
The eighth day, 26 March, is for Maa Mahagauri. She is radiant. The color is pink. The offering is coconut. The lesson is to forgive. Be forgiven. Begin again. Break the hard shell of the ego.
The ninth day, 27 March, is for Maa Siddhidatri. She grants all perfections. The color is purple. The offering is black sesame. The lesson is to stop asking. Start trusting. You have done the work. The grace will come.
Ram Navami The Ninth Day
The ninth day is also Ram Navami, the birth of Lord Rama. Rama is the seventh avatar of Vishnu. He is the perfect man, the ideal king, the obedient son, the faithful husband. His story is told in the Ramayana. On this day, devotees fast, visit temples, and read the Ramayana. The birth of Rama is celebrated at noon. The temple bells ring. The chants begin. The prasad is distributed.
The Palanquin and the Elephant
The goddess arrives in a Palki, a palanquin. She departs on an elephant. The palanquin sways. The elephant stands firm. That is the spiritual arc of the year. The beginning may feel unstable. The end will be grounded. The palanquin is the mind not yet anchored in God. The elephant is the mind that has been purified by practice.

How to Observe the Nine Nights
Chant the Durga mantra every morning. Om Hreem Dum Durgaye Namaha. One hundred and eight times. Do not rush. Feel the vibration.
Between 10:00 PM and midnight, when the world is still, sit in silence. Even twenty minutes. The subconscious is most receptive at this hour.
Choose at least one hour of silence every day. No phone. No conversation. Just you and your breath.
Fast if you can. Fruits, milk, sabudana. The purpose is not to punish the body. It is to lighten the mind. A heavy meal makes a heavy mind. A light meal makes a light mind.
For at least one night, ask for nothing. Sit before the goddess. Offer your presence. No requests. No wishes. Just emptiness. That is the highest prayer.
Kanya Pujan
On Ashtami, the eighth day, or on Ram Navami, the ninth day, worship nine young girls. Invite them into your home. Wash their feet. Feed them halwa, puri, and chana. Give them a small gift. Touch their feet. They are the living forms of the goddess.
Children are pure. Their hearts are not yet cluttered with ego. When you bow to a child, your own ego bows. That is the purpose of the ritual.
A Final Word
Chaitra Navratri is not a festival of lights or colors. It is a festival of silence. Nine nights of sitting, chanting, fasting, and watching the mind. The mind will resist. It will want distraction. It will want noise. Do not give it. Sit anyway. The goddess is not outside. She is not in the Kalash. She is not in the idol. She is in the space between your thoughts. That space is small at first. By the ninth night, it will be larger. That is the blessing. That is the new year.
